The beetle rolls a ball in front of himself - thanks to that ball, he can bounce off flippers installed in the environment in order to reach places difficult to access. The game is played from a side view and the core of the experience is made up of platforming elements, such as exploring, avoiding traps, eliminating adversaries or collecting valuable items.

Arcade 30 July 2018A continuation of a stylish old-school platform game that had us travel through Aztec ruins as Lemeza Kosugi, an agile archeologist similar to Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones. La-Mulana 2 enables us to assume the role of the daughter of that hero, who had turned out just like her father, traveling through mysterious, inaccessible locations while wearing her trademark hat. The new adventure takes us to Scandinavia, and introduces a plot inspired by Nordic legends. The game sees us explore dangerous levels, full of inventive traps and aggressive creatures, including powerful and demanding bosses. Further into the story, we acquire new weapons and useful abilities, and buy necessary equipment using various valuables found along the way. La-Mulana 2 reuses the 8-bit design introduced by its predecessor, at the same time introducing numerous fixes and wide-screen support.

RPG 2021Developed by the independent studio Black Hive, Kova is a 2D RPG with Metroidvania elements. The action of the game is set in a distant future, in which the titular main protagonist is a space mercenary, who encounters a trace of a beacon located on an unknown ice planet during her journey through an uncharted region of galaxy. The protagonist’s main objective is to discover the purpose of the beacon and answer the question if and why are there people in the universe. The players observe the action from a side perspective. What makes the exploration more difficult is the necessity to jump between platforms as well as to overcome numerous obstacles and chasms.

During the game, one can visit diverse planets, each with unique atmosphere and ecosystem. Moreover, a player can choose to join one of the three factions, which influences, i.a., the missions one has to carry out. As the story develops, the main protagonist acquires new abilities that, combined with the crafting system, provide the player an advantage on the battlefield and unlock access to previously unavailable locations.

In the course of gameplay we explore subsequent locations, solve simple puzzles and fight enemies; and as we progress, we gain new weapons and gradually improve the abilities of the protagonist.

A distinctive feature of the game is the power to manipulate time, by which Lunais can move through different eras, avoid enemies and get into seemingly inaccessible places. The game, developed by Double Helix Games, is set in a grim future where Earth is ruled by a cruel dictator – Grandmaster Meio.

As Hiryu, a young warrior who achieved 'Super A' rank as the youngest member of the titular organization, we must put an end to Meio's rule and kill him. Even though Strider is implemented in fully 3D visuals we observe the game from a side-view perspective. During the game we visit diverse locations, jump on platforms, avoid traps and various dangers but also fight enemies. During the fights we use not only futuristic weapons but also various acrobatic moves that can be performed by the hero, such as running on walls or deflecting incoming projectiles with a sword. Similarly to other games in this style the hero gets new abilities as the game progresses, which allows us to return to previous levels and reach places that were inaccessible before. Action TBAThe fourth full-fledged installment in the best-selling action series Metroid Prime, owned by Nintendo. Metroid Prime 4 is the first installment designed for Nintendo Switch.

The game’s protagonist is Samus Aran – an interstellar bounty huntress fighting with Space Pirates. After the events presented in the previous game, the heroine gets entangled in another intrigue, which forces her to embark on another dangerous journey. In the game we go through vast, nonlinear levels and fight the opponents we encounter – implemented in first-person shooter mechanics. The heroine has not only got a diverse arsenal of energy rifles, but also a wide range of special skills. One of them is Morph Ball, which allows her to reach hardly accessible places. Thanks to such mechanics, the challenges the player faces in Metroid Prime 4 are not only arcade in nature but logic-based as well. Chasm tells a story of a soldier who returns home after a long war. He arrives in an abandoned mining town and discovers most of its inhabitants have disappeared after entering a mysterious temple, deep down beneath the village. Our hero decides to stop the awakened evil, rescue the town’s inhabitants, and then safely return to his home. The game borrows many features from classics like Metroid or Castlevania, as well as The Legend of Zelda and Diablo series. The game's metroidvania-inspired premise is mixed with RPG mechanics, meaning that the hero can obtain new equipment and develop his skills. As we play, we must avoid traps, solve environmental puzzles and – obviously – fight with generic enemies and powerful bosses. Arcade 22 February 2017A two-dimensional platform game developed by Mixed Bag, an independent duo responsible for the well-received Futuridium EP.

The player assumes control over the titular research probe that is tasked with exploring an uncharted, hostile planet in search of a powerful energy source that emanates from its core. Forma.8 sees us traverse a hostile world in a manner similar to other metroidvania titles.

The probe is self-propelled and subjected to the basic rules of dynamics – the player often has to resort to pressure-sensitive movements in order to get through the natural obstacles or varied enemies, including bosses. Interestingly enough, we encounter various power-ups along the way, which often allow us to gain a temporary advantage over our pursuers. The game is characteristic for its refined graphics based on three-dimensional elements with hand-drawn environment.
